What Is the Put Call Ratio (PCR)?

The Put-Call Ratio (PCR) is a popular technical derivative indicator calculated by dividing total Put contract volume or open interest by total Call contract volume or open interest.

Mathematical Formula:

PCR (OI) = Total Put Open Interest / Total Call Open Interest

Standard Interpretation Guidelines

  • PCR > 1.2 (Bullish / Contrarian Oversold): High put writing indicates strong downside support levels.
  • PCR < 0.8 (Bearish / Contrarian Overbought): High call writing indicates significant overhead resistance.
  • 0.8 to 1.2 (Neutral / Consolidation): Indicates balanced derivative positioning between buyers and sellers.

Limitations of PCR

PCR should never be used as a standalone trading signal. It must be combined with technical price action, trend confirmation, macro market events, and broader risk management rules.
